Top 5 Reasons Why No One Reads Your Blog

Did you know a new blog is created on the internet EVERY SECOND!

And every one of those people want to drive visitors to their blog. No wonder it's so hard to bring' em.

I was recently browsing the net for blogs and I found an not-so-astonishing fact: 90% of blogs are just complete crap. When I say crap, I mean either lack of visitors, the blog owner gave up posting or just crappy content (how many times have you seen "test post"). This is not too surprising considering the huge number of faults I found with almost every blog.

Here are the top 5 reasons why 90% of the net's blogs get hardly any readers.

1. Infrequency of Updates

This is the number one reason a blog sucks.

Face it. No one wants to read a stale blog. More than half the blogs that I visited which had failed in attracting a readership did not update their content often enough. Remember, updating your blog regularly and constantly brings search engine traffic, and keeps readers interested.

How often should you update? Well it depends on the type of content you blog about - for the average blog 2 posts a day is a must.

2. Copycat or 'Linkcat'

Many "junk" blogs nowadays simply link or embed content from other sites/pics/vids rather than actually producing content. Remember, linking is only acceptable once in a while - you MUST produce content to make your blog seaworthy.

What content, you ask? That depends on what your blog is about. For a general blog,  review, opinion and overview is generally enough when linking content. Be careful though, and ask yourself; Would I want to read this?

Also, copy and paste is NOT "content production". When writing, don't forget to cite your references. Try Zotero for help on that.

3. Crappy Design or Layout

This aspect of blogging is not given half the importance it deserves. You have to remember, there are MILLIONS of blogs out at sea, and your's has to stand out if you want people to come.  Seeing a different design after going through hundreds of similar designs has a great impact on the viewer.

How many blogs have you seen with the "Minima" theme? It's a great theme, but there are just too many blogs with that. People will be attracted if your blog has something different or outstanding, not the same old boring layout.

If you posses some designer skills, it's always a good idea to design a template from scratch or at least modify an existing one. If you don't, ask a friend or someone to make a theme for you.

Themes should not be too outlandish, but should still be unique and aesthetically pleasing to look at. Fonts and colors can also distinguish a design well, but use them in a way that it goes easy on the eye (no bright colours or crazy fonts).

Also go easy on the ads...people will be turned off with crappy ad layout. Put ads in strategic places without slamming it into reader's faces. Use colors which blend in with your site.

4. Lack of Social Networking

Remember, blogs are a social networking product, and social networking is a must for promoting your blog. Quality is more important than quantity; don't spam.

Dedicate time to building friend lists and becoming well-known in the community. And the most important part of your submission is the title, so make those titles funny, witty, and unique. Descriptions should not sound like advertisements, and don't overdo it.

A great tool for submitting articles to all the social networking site is SocialMarker.com. This site allows you to easily submit your articles to all major social networking sites.

Another great tool for promoting your articles is BlogBookmark.com.

5. Locational Content

Many blogggers assume (or seem to assume) that everyone who reads their blog lives in their country. Now remember that the internet is worldwide, so make your blog that as well. Your blog content should not be restricted to a particular country or region - this severely restricts your audience.

Ask yourself; Would I read this if I lived on the other side of the world?
